A wireless data capture system can make a key difference to many warehouse and distribution applications. However, even such technologically sophisticated solutions need upgrading occasionally. When the Musgrave Group wanted to update its wireless network, it called in a company that specialises in automated data capture, Waveform Solutions. Waveform supplied and installed a system based around a Cisco 54Mb Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Rugged Dolphin Mobile computers and LXE Truck Mounted computers.
The Business Challenge
Musgrave’s core strategy is ‘to support independent retail operators in the grocery sector’.
It achieves this aim by delivering a high level of professional expertise and support services. As part of this strategy, the company consulted Waveform Solutions to give independent advice on its automated data collection systems. Musgrave recently decided that it wanted to control its warehouse operations more effectively by installing a new warehouse management and Shelf Edge Labelling solution. This would help to streamline the company’s activities across its 13 nationwide Cash & Carry sites.
The Solution
Musgrave already had a 2Mb Wireless LAN, but wanted to replace and upgrade this. After detailed discussions with the company, Waveform suggested an 11Mb WLAN solution (which has since been upgraded with an innovative Cisco 54Mb WLAN) that incorporated Dolphin 9551 & Dolphin 7600 Mobile Computers from Honeywell (formerly Handheld Products), LXE VX6 truck mounted terminals, Zebra mobile printers and Cisco Access Points.
The Hardware
Dolphin 9551 Mobile Computer
The Dolphin 9551 is a rugged mobile computer that supports Microsoft® Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PCs. It also offers 802.11b wireless communications and has been specifically designed for long range scanning applications in a warehouse environment – such as cross-docking, picking and sorting, and high shelf scanning.

Radio Site Survey
Following a radio site survey carried out by specially trained Waveform engineers, a Cisco based Wireless LAN was supplied and installed. The new warehouse and shelf edge labelling solution has now been incorporated into a number of Musgrave's warehouse and cash & carry outlets nationwide. The company has plans to roll the solution out to the remaining premises in the future. Waveform Solutions is providing full system support to all 13 Musgrave sites.
